XOXO

I got the coolest sunglasses ever!

IMG_4762

IMG_4761

Sunglasses by Alexandra Cassaniti, coat by Jcrew, necklace by Forever 21, sweater dress by 3.1 Phillip Lim (on major sale at Bird!), bracelets by me

I think sunglasses are my new thing. It's possible I may be a highly sensitive person, and I was reading about how those traits are often translated physically too. I have sensitive skin, sensitive eyes; light flashes give me migraines, etc. I'm also highly sensitive to hideous fashion, so I had to get these amazing Face It glasses, to shield me from Uggs, leggings as pants, etc. I love them so much! I saw them originally in Creatures of Comfort, but then found them on the designer's website for way less. They came with a little bag of neoprene scraps labeled "Surfer confetti." SO CUTE.

Some fun DIYs are happening this weekend, will post in a few days! In the meantime, I was so excited to read about Mariko's glitter shoes! I can't wait to see them on! Make your own using my DIY post!

Shibori circle scarves

IMG_4664

I'm working on some great new items for the shop! Keep an eye out for silk and wool shibori circle scarves, and some cute new pouches!

I'm also working with Raymond to design a leather color-blocked backpack for him for spring.

The Real Chicks of Central Park (Zoo)

I work for a nonprofit, so when I see other nonprofits asking for money, I generally just evaluate their methods to see what I can borrow (ahem). But these baby penguin chicks are so adorable that I totally got a chick magnet for Raymond!

I'm not sure who I love more, the chicks or Juan.

...now back to me.

If it weren't for Hulu, I'd miss out on everything!

I don't want to grow up...

I picked up the new Jcrew catalog this weekend, and I only want to wear the kids' clothes!

jcrew

Pretty color schemes, comfy-looking clothes! I think I can knit the sweater dress.

jcrew

I hope my future daughter is this cute. In the meantime, I really want to wear casual sequins and star-print dresses. You can't see it in the pic, but she's wearing the outfit with desert boots (which I have, naturally)!

jcrew

Once again, future baby and style icon. I've been wanting that overnight duffle bag for awhile (monogrammed, of course).

jcrew

The outfit on the left is the only women's version I was really into, and I love that there's a child's version that's almost the same except for the colors. I'll do a combo of the two with my navy coat and some neon arm warmers!

Curtains match the carpets

Apparently temporary tooth tattoos/decals are popular in Japan now!

Kind of a light and trendy version of body modification. Here's the other end of the spectrum:

donut head from Bizarre Magazine

Donut/bagel head. A few years ago, people started filling their heads up with saline to make these crazy shapes! It gets absorbed by your body after a few hours so it's not permanent. Vice just did a piece on it a few months ago so there are tons more pics on the web now, if you are so inclined.

BTW I think I should go to Japan to be a model, because they love the H-Asians (half Asians)!

I'm an auntie!

And I have been for about a month, but didn't get any pics until today!

Deathly Hallows Tattoo

Since I'm sure this is going to become the next most common search term to find my blog, I'm going to go ahead and say it: this is my sister's Harry Potter Deathly Hallows tattoo.

Yes, it's true.

I'm so famous!

Pics taken by Bill Cunningham for the NY Times Sunday edition this past week! It's from the Governor's Island Roaring 20's party a couple weeks ago.

Hi, I'm a bunny.

I'm getting excited about the new Muppets movie!

I'd like to thank the little people.

I stumbled across Christopher Boffoli's set, Disparity, while looking at My Modern Met. Aren't these tiny people cute? And the use of food as the set makes everything so bright and happy.

I sent the link to my coworker and we looked on our separate computers, and after a few minutes he said, "This Oscar fellow has some cute pictures here!" and I said, "... who's Oscar?" Somehow he had gotten to a link with these pictures by Oscar Ciutat instead!

And then a quick Google search led me to these photos by Slinkachu.

I love the more urban feel of these, as they seem more relevant to my actual New York life. The first two make me feel like I live in Apartment Therapy, which would be awesome, but is pretty far from reality.

Whoa, freshness.

Ever since I started "helping" my bf shop, I've been paying a lot more attention to cool things happening in menswear. It's all about the details!

These Ronnie Fieg x Sebago Spinnakers are so perfect for the look I imagine for him: sexy, sporty prep with just a pinch of edgy dandy to keep it from being too Polo. I love the subtle tonal difference in the colors of the leather on the upper, and the red laces are so saturated! I can see these standing on the floor of the Ace Hotel as well as walking into Vanessa's for some 4-for-$1 dumplings and a bubble tea.

We're probably going to end up going for this one though:

since the Ronnie Fieg ones are sold out in his size.

Camera bag

I'm on my way to the Rebecca Minkoff sale later, but until then I'm just browsing. This Kate Spade Pocomo bag is so adorable!

kate spade pocomo

Although I can't really see paying $255 for something that I could get an authentic version of on Ebay for about $10.

Peep this peep show

It's a testament to my mom's perseverance in enforcing the no-sugar rule when I was a kid that I have never to this day eaten a Peep. They freak me out. Except when they're sacrificing each other. That, I love!

peep sacrifice

peep jobs

peeping beauty

These three pics are from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, but they took the slideshow down before I could link to it! There are Peep diorama contests each year in a few cities, and some of the entries are amazingly detailed.

peeps synchronized

This one's from the Washington Post peep show! I think I like the concept of the synchronized swimming the best, but I love the saturated colors of the photo for the sacrificial one.

Happy Easter! This post is probably the extent of my celebration.

The Writing Process

Ed Yong's diagram of the writing process is so depressingly accurate.

The writing process

And also adorably nerdy and British. I'm American! I don't "piss about" unless I'm actually pissing about, which I'm happy to say I've never done. Even when drunk. Also, let's replace "GOOOAAAAL!" with "TOUCHDOWN!!!!!"

Dear Uniqlo

Dear Uniqlo, please don't go the way of Target and do so many collaborations that they all become meaningless. It's just like what our mothers used to tell us about love. Wait for someone special! Who'll treat you like you should be treated.

I have nothing really against Charlotte Ronson, and in fact I once had a very good time at one of her sample sales. But then I realized that 5-inch platform boat shoe slingbacks aren't really walkable if you live in Brooklyn and work in Manhattan, and now they're just another thing taking up room in my Buffalo Exchange bag.

uniqlo-cronson-1

I'm all about brights for spring (so the first one is out) and the second one is just too cutesy. I'm almost 30! There, I said it. I don't feel like I can really go around wearing halter tops printed with sailboats anymore. AMIRITE?

uniqlo-cronson-2

While I don't really love these next items, I do actually love Vena Cava. They make amazing dresses, use beautiful fabric, have interesting designs, and it's true what Racked said about each of their collaborations still being so clearly Vena Cava. But again, these clothes make me feel a tad old.

uniqlo-venacava-1

It's a crop top with a long modesty panel! And I don't like those shirts that are sort of made to look like they're a bustier over a sleeved shirt. It reminds me of those v-neck sweaters with little shirt collars sewn to them. Like dickies. Once when I was in second grade, we had to get a gift for someone else in Girl Scouts, and my mom made me take a dicky. It was traumatizing.

uniqlo-venacava-2

These I actually do like, but jersey dresses are sort of the last thing I need in my closet at this point.

uniqlo-cosatella

The Costello Tagliapietra collection is elegant and has some innovative design features, but again, I'm sort of over the jersey dress thing. My comments:

1. I see this on an elementary school art teacher at a "fancy" dinner, worn with tons of boho jewelry.

2. My cousin is six months pregnant, and this dress reminds me of what her stomach and belly button must be like.

3. I think I just bought a silk version of this on sale at Oak.

Jcrew Fall 2011

Can you guess the song for each lyric/caption?

THE HITS

jcrew-1

Ever since I watched that one episode of Gossip Girl, I've been obsessed with brightly colored bottoms, especially the pink shorts Blair wears at W Magazine.

jcrew-2

I love the combination of blues/greens in the first pic. The cobalt necklace with the light/sky blue sweater and the dark, muted teal trench. I also love the rich camel with the light blue in the second pic, although I'm wondering how good the outfit will look when the coat's off and you're left with the blue/gray chambray and the bright/light blue pants.

jcrew-3

Fuschia looks good with anything! As if I had to say it. And I love the robin's egg blue pumps with the orange outfit!

jcrew-4

The ladylike rock and roll details on these sort of push them over the edge! Leather sleeves on a sweater is something I've been wanting to knit/sew for awhile. I'm not sure about those stripey leggings though. What happens when you take off the smock?

jcrew-7

I love the 70s career girl/news reporter look! I'm actually already knitting something like that gray sweater.

THE MISSES

jcrew-5

Especially if the britches are as big and ill-fitting as these are. Pairing heels with oversized cargo pants doesn't necessarily make them chic! The color combo on the right is gorgeous, and it's ruined by the diaper the model looks like she's wearing under those awful high-waisted, pleated, tapered pants.

jcrew-6

This poor girl on the right never gets to look good! If models look like this in these outfits, what are we normal people going to look like? Our first-grade teachers, that's who. Hi Mrs. Kinley (my favorite elementary school teacher)! Or I guess more specifically, we're going to look like that other fifth-grade teacher we were so relieved we never had because we heard she was so mean and then one day she had gastric bypass surgery and she went from whale size to tee-niny, but with all these folds of skin everywhere. Hi! I won't say her name because that's mean.

See the rest here!
